Our Name

Ngati Maniapoto iwi are descendants of the Tainui waka that came ashore at Maketu in the Kawhia harbour and thus

trace their genealogical lines directly back to this historical landing.

Maniapoto is an established tribe and the people of their many marae developed the concept of an iwi

organisation working outside of any perceived constraints of the Crown to make sure their future security, prosperity,

well-being and cultural identity was preserved. A genuine effort of working for the people by the people approach.

So our name represents the people of Maniapoto marae working collectively to secure their well-being and

future prosperity.
